Australian two-hander and defending champion Jason Belmonte shook off jet lag as he competed in his first squad of qualifying Monday at the 2018 Storm Lucky Larsen Masters.

Belmonte traveled from his home in Orange, NSW, Australia, for the long trip to Malmo, Sweden. Here’s his journey: Four hours to Sydney, 14.5 hours to Dubai, 7.5 hours to Copenhagen and 30 minutes to Malmo.

So after more than 26 hours of traveling, what did Belmonte do? He bowled his first squad of qualifying and led the squad by almost 100 pins.

Belmonte totaled 1,341 for six games, a respectable total that would likely make the cut, though he will likely bowl more squads to try to earn byes in the finals.

It was a little bit of a shaky start to the squad for Belmonte as he had games of 201, 211 and 189 before shaking off the jet lag and shooting 242, 279 and 219 to close out the block.

The Lucky Larsen Masters follows a traditional European tournament format where bowlers qualify based on six-game totals and they can re-enter to try to post their best score.

Belmonte’s total currently places him in 10th place after 17 of 33 squads completed. Denmark’s Jimmy Dan Mortensen leads with 1,451, followed by PBA star Jesper Svensson of Sweden with 1,411.

Qualifying continues through Saturday with many big names scheduled to arrive this week to begin competing. Live coverage of the event on FloBowling begins Thursday.
