Urethane Balls Popular Choice At Worlds

The list of all 1,516 bowling balls checked in by the 265 players at the 2018 World Bowling Men’s Championships reveals some interesting information about what the players brought with them to the event.

The most popular bowling ball was Storm’s Pitch Black urethane ball with 82 of them checked in. Storm’s IQ Tour was next on the list with 46, followed by the Purple Pearl Urethane from Hammer with 41. The Roto Grip Idol Magenta was fourth with 38 and the Purple Hammer and Storm Code X tied for fifth with 27.

Although the Purple Pearl Urethane and Purple Hammer are listed separately by World Bowling, it is entirely likely that many of those are actually the newer version of Hammer’s urethane ball – the Purple Pearl Urethane. Some, however, may actually be the 1991 release Purple Hammer. Regardless, both are urethane balls.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Storm Phaze II (25), Roto Grip Hot Cell (24), Hammer Black Urethane (23) and Hammer Black Widow Urethane (23).

Overall, five of the top 10 bowling balls checked in had urethane covers, totaling nearly 200 bowling balls. There are other urethane balls in the field as well but what we can assume is a vast majority of the field brought at least one urethane ball in their arsenal.

It’s no surprise that so many urethane bowling balls are among the top 10. There are simply less urethane balls on the market, so players have fewer choices if they want to bring urethane, which skews the numbers.

In all there were 400 different bowling balls checked in among the 1,516 total with 20 different manufacturers represented.

Storm had the most bowling balls with 566, more than a third of all bowling balls checked in, while Hammer was second with 215, Roto Grip third with 202, Brunswick fourth with 123 and Motiv rounding out the top five with 107.
