A change in lane conditions led to a big shakeup at the top of the leaderboard Thursday as EJ Tackett moved into the lead at the 2019 PBA Lubbock Sports Open.

Bowling on the 42-foot Scorpion pattern in the second round, Tackett jumped from seventh place after the first round up to first place at South Plains Lanes in Lubbock, Texas. The first round was contested on the 32-foot Wolf pattern.

Tackett has a 14-game total of 3,137, a 224.07 average, to lead the field of 93 bowlers, which was narrowed down to the top 24 after Thursday’s second round.

“For me, the key to bowling in tournaments with different lane conditions is staying ahead of the moves and adjustments you need to make and make sure you dial in your focus on each lane,” Tackett said in a PBA release. “It’s tough enough when you’re bowling a tournament on the same condition, but on multiple conditions, it can create a domino effect of problems if you fall behind. You don’t want to have to play catch up.”

Kyle Troup sits in second place with 3,134, while AJ Chapman is third with 3,107. Chapman was the only bowler among the top five after Wednesday’s opening round who stayed there, although he dropped from second down to third.

Kyle Sherman jumped into fourth place with 3,100, and Anthony Lavery-Spahr is fifth with 3,099. Meanwhile, first-round leader Kris Prather dropped to ninth place with 3,083.

Jakob Butturff, who struggled mightily on the shorter pattern Wednesday, made a big comeback on the Scorpion pattern Thursday. After sitting in 42nd place, he jumped up to 19th place with 2,982 and could have been higher in the standings if not for a 169 finish to the second round.

If Butturff can claw his way into match play and earn the top seed for this week’s stepladder finals, he will be the first bowler in PBA Tour history to earn the top seed in four consecutive tournaments.

The cut to make the top 24 was Ryan Ciminelli with 2,945, a 210.36 average. Richie Teece and Josh Blanchard just missed the cut, finishing in a tie for 25th place with 2,942, just three pins off the number.

The field of 24 remaining bowlers will return Friday live on FloBowling at 8 a.m. Central for seven final games of qualifying in the cashers round before the field is cut to the top 16. Round robin match play begins Friday at 1:30 p.m. Central with the first of eight games.

The rest of the event will feature dual patterns with the Scorpion pattern on the left lane and the shorter Wolf pattern on the right lane.
