Match 16: USA def. Europe 300-257 (USA 10, Europe 6)

Team USA capped off a dominating second day at the Weber Cup with an impressive 300- Baker win over Europe to take a 10-6 overall lead in the race to 18 points.

The victory capped off an incredible day for the USA as they tossed the first Baker 300 game in the history of the Weber Cup.

Nearly all 10 strikes were absolutely perfect for Team USA, but there was one captivating moment when Simonsen nearly left a 10 pin in the eight frame. However, a messenger made its way across the deck and slowly took out the 10 pin for a strike.

Otherwise, Team USA buried nine other strikes for perfection, while Europe looked dejected in losing its fourth consecutive match to end the day.

Theoretically, Team USA could lock up the Weber Cup title tomorrow by winning eight of the nine scheduled matches. The first team to reach 18 points wins the cup.

Match 15: Troup def. Palermaa, 246-242 (USA 9, Europe 6)

In a match that may end up being the catalyst for a USA victory at this year’s Weber Cup, Kyle Troup came from behind to beat Osku Palermaa, 246-242, as the USA took a 9-6 lead.

After struggling through the first four frames and trailing by more than 30 pins, Troup made a gutsy ball change that paid major dividends.

The change resulted in Troup not missing again as he struck out from the fifth frame on, including a must-have strike in the final frame, to steal a win against Palermaa.

After leaving back-to-back 10 pins to start the match, Palermaa was in the driver’s seat with four strikes in a row before he left the bucket in the seventh frame. He left an eight pin in the eighth frame as things got even closer.

In a critical shot in the final frame, Palermaa could have shut out Troup with a strike but went through the face and left a six pin.

Given the change, Troup buried another strike to push the USA lead to 9-6.

The final match of the day will be a Baker match between the two sides.

Match 14: Barnes/Simonsen def. Barrett/Williams, 267-267, 60-16 (USA 8, Europe 6)

In a high-scoring battle that resulted in the first roll-off, Chris Barnes and Anthony Simonsen took down Dom Barrett and Stu Williams to put the USA up 8-6 overall.

After finishing the match tied at 267, the teams went to a ninth and 10th frame roll-off which was won by the Americans 60-16. Team USA went first with Simonsen leaving a rocking 10 pin that went back and forth before finally falling for a strike.

Looking to match the strike, Williams pulled the ball badly, leaving the 3-6-9-10. Barrett converted the spare but the damage was done as the count was a killer in the current-frame scoring system.

In the final frame of the rolloff, Barnes and Simonsen just need seven, spare to secure the win, and Barnes crushed the pocket for a strike keeping Barrett from even having a chance to bowl the final frame for Europe.

There are two matches left in today’s session and next up is a singles dust up between Kyle Troup and Osku Palermaa.

Match 13: Butturff def. Svensson, 278-235 (USA 7, Europe 6)

After the doubles match, Jesper Svensson looked like he had a better look than Jakob Butturff but things flipped in their singles match as Butturff rolled to a 278-235 victory to put the USA up 7-6.

Butturff took the lead early and never looked back after Svensson left and missed a 6-7 split in the second frame.

Butturff went on to strike eight times in the match, leaving just a 10 pin in the third and seven pin in the ninth.

Another doubles match is on the horizon for Match 14 with Chris Barnes and Anthony Simonsen taking on Dom Barrett and Stu Williams.

Match 12: Svensson/Palermaa def. Troup/Butturff, 257-236 (Europe 6, USA 6)

The Weber Cup continues to swing back and forth as Jesper Svensson and Osku Palermaa gave Europe a key doubles victory with a 257-236 win over Kyle Troup and Jakob Butturff to even things at 6-6.

The European side got out to an early 21-pin lead after the first frame when Troup left a 4-6-10 split and Butturff failed to convert it. The Americans would never lead in the match.

A 4-9 split by Palermaa in the fourth frame that resulted in an open leveled the match, but Team USA wasn’t able to take advantage as Butturff left the Big Four in the very next frame.

Troup struck in the eighth, Butturff in the ninth and Troup again in the 10th to put minimal pressure on Svensson heading into the final frame.

Needing any kind of mark for the win, Svensson popped a thunderous strike to secure the win.

Butturff bowls Svensson, whose look on the 45-foot pattern appears to be very good, in an all-lefty matchup next.

Match 11: Barnes def. Barrett, 257-234 (USA 6, Europe 5)

After taking a lead and faltering down the stretch in his first matchup with Dom Barrett on the opening day, Chris Barnes didn’t let history repeat itself as he won 257-234 to put the USA up 6-5.

Barnes got out of the gates quickly with a pair of strikes and built a 23-pin lead after two frames as Barrett failed to strike in either frame.

Barrett would never lead in the match as Barnes kept the pressure on despite making single-pin spares in the third and fourth frames. He struck four straight times from frames five through eight to build a 44-pin lead and coast to the victory.

It’s back to doubles for the next match as Butturff and Kyle Troup take on Jesper Svensson and Osku Palermaa.

Match 10: Barrett/Palermaa def. Butturff/Barnes, 236-234 (Europe 5, USA 5)

In the first doubles match of this year’s Weber Cup, both had shaky stretches but Dom Barrett and Osku Palermaa emerged with a 236-234 victory over Jakob Butturff and Chris Barnes to even the Weber Cup at 5-5.

Team USA got off to a disaster start when Butturff left a seven pin and Barnes missed it as the players alternate shots in the scotch doubles format.

Barrett and Palermaa each opened with a strike as they built a 32-pin lead early on but things got bumpy for the Europeans after that. In the fourth frame, Barrett left a 4-7-10 split and Palmerra got the 4-7 for the open. In the fifth, Barrett left a 10 pin and Palermaa missed it.

When things got to the final frame, Barrett and Palermaa needed a mark with good count to secure the win. Barrett left a four pin and Palermaa converted it to even the Weber Cup.

The next match will be a singles match between team captains Barnes and Barrett.

Match 9: Troup def. Palermaa, 278-201 (USA 5, Europe 4)

The first match of Day 2 turned out to be a dominating win for Team USA as Kyle Troup routed Osku Palermaa, 278-201, to put the USA up 5-4 overall.

Troup looked strong from the very beginning, starting with three consecutive strikes before leaving a flat 10 pin. Palermaa held in there starting by sparing a two pin and then striking three times.

Things got ugly for Palermaa in the fifth frame, however, when he left the 1-2-4-6-10 super washout. He made it but in the next frame left the 3-4-6-10 split for an open.

Troup, meanwhile, struck in eight of the 10 frames as he rolled to the win.

Up next is the first doubles match of the 2019 Weber Cup as Jakob Butturff and Chris Barnes will take on Dom Barrett and Palermaa.
