LUBBOCK, Texas – Jakob Butturff reached the winner’s circle for the third time this season as he won the 2019 PBA Lubbock Sports Shootout for his seventh career PBA Tour title.

Butturff, a left-hander with a quirky release who earlier this year won the PBA Oklahoma Open and USBC Masters, defeated Stu Williams, 194-188, in a tough championship match at South Plains Lanes.

Needing a mark in the final frame to secure the victory, Butturff tugged the ball a little high and left a six pin. He easily converted the spare and celebrated the victory.

Williams controlled his own destiny in the final frame as he finished the match first. With a strike and seven, spare, Williams could shut Butturff out. Instead, disaster struck in the final frame.

A light hit resulted in a 2-4-6-10 split, which Williams missed, to make life on Butturff much easier. On the spare attempt, Williams chopped the four pin straight back. It popped onto the deck and took down the two pin but had no momentum to knock out the 6-10.

Butturff’s third win of the season is second only to Jason Belmonte, who has won four times this year and is the leading contender for PBA Player of the Year.

The victory keeps Butturff in the conversation for the PBA’s top honors, but he more than likely would need to pick up a couple more wins, possibly even the season-ending U.S. Open, to surpass Belmonte in the voters’ minds.

Butturff, who won his first career title in Lubbock in 2016, got out of the gates quick in the semifinal, blasting past EJ Tackett, 235-185, to advance to the championship match.

Butturff started with six consecutive strikes to build a 50-pin lead and cruised to the victory. Tackett, meanwhile, just couldn’t put anything together, alternating between spares and strikes for the first five frames before leaving the 3-4-6-7-10 split in the sixth to all but seal his fate.

In the opening match, Tackett made quick work of Anthony Lavery-Spahr with a blowout 279-194 victory. Tackett got out to a big start, striking on his first seven shots to build a 64-pin lead and never look back.

Lavery-Spahr, who was seeking his first career title, didn’t throw his first double until the seventh frame when it was too late.

The next PBA Tour event will be the PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles, which will be broadcast live on FloBowling from July 25-28.
