HOUSTON – The 40 teams that advanced into the semifinals were determined Saturday afternoon as the first cut was made at the 2019 Storm PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles.

Sydney Brummett and Kris Prather, who bowled on the first squad of the tournament on Friday, held onto the top spot with a seven-game total of 3,222 at Copperfield Bowl. Prather shot 1,723, while Brummett had 1,499.

The pair got a late challenge on the final squad Saturday as Erin McCarthy and AJ Johnson made a run at the lead in the final game. McCarthy and Johnson finished with 3,185, just 37 pins back of the lead.

Results: PBA/PWBA Mixed Doubles Overall Qualifying

Johnson totaled 1,680 despite starting with a 149 game, while McCarthy had 1,505. The duo fired 509 in the final game but came up just short of taking the overall lead.

Liz Johnson and EJ Tackett, who bowled on Squad B on Friday, finished qualifying in third with 3,138. Tackett had 1,685, while Johnson totaled 1,453.

The leaders from Squad C, Taylor Bulthuis and Josh Blanchard, finished qualifying in fourth place with 3,116. Blanchard fired 1,594 and Bulthuis had 1,522.

One team from each squad finished in the top four, while two teams from each squad finished among the top eight in qualifying.

The top 40 teams in the sold-out 160-team field advanced into Sunday’s semifinals, which will consist of five additional qualifying games. The top eight teams after the semifinals will bowl an eight-game round robin match play finals with the winners of the event based on total pinfall.

The PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Over that span, the event has raised more than $1 million in the fight against breast cancer.
