Ballots Are Out For PBA's Top Honors

The PBA sent out ballots on Dec. 3 to players and media members to vote on Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year for the 2019 season.

In all, there are 10 players on the ballot for top player honors and six players on the ballot for top rookie. The winners will be announced live on FloBowling at 4 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 11.

Candidates for PBA Player of the Year include Dom Barrett, Jason Belmonte, Jakob Butturff, Norm Duke, Bill O’Neill, Kris Prather, Sean Rash, Kyle Sherman, Anthony Simonsen and EJ Tackett. Players on the Rookie of the Year ballot include Mike Coffey, Michael Davidson, Patrick Hanrahan, Mykel Holliman, Kenneth Ryan and Greg Young.

Based on the stats, it appears it will be a much easier decision this year for voters than it was last year when Andrew Anderson won the Player of the Year award. Belmonte is the clear favorite, having won four titles, including two majors, and leading the points and earnings categories. He also cashed in 16 out of 18 events.

Butturff won three titles this year, including the USBC Masters, and finished second to Belmonte in points and earnings. Although Butturff had another great season, which included a runner-up finish to Belmonte at the PBA World Championship, it seems unlikely he will be able to challenge Belmonte for the award.

Four other players won two titles in 2019, including Duke, O’Neill, Rash and Simonsen. Of those, only Simonsen had a major title when he won the PBA Players Championship by defeating Belmonte.

In the PBA Rookie of the Year race, no rookie won an event in 2019 but two players did make championship-round appearances.

Holliman had arguably the best single-event performance as a rookie this year when he finished second at the USBC Masters, losing to Butturff in the title match. It was his only stepladder appearance of the season, but he did lead all rookies in points and earnings.

Young made two stepladders during the FloBowling PBA Summer Tour. He finished third at the PBA Chesapeake Open and fifth at the PBA Wolf Open and was the only rookie to make two shows. Young finished second in rookie earnings and third in points among rookies.

Although Ryan didn’t make a show he did have a strong appearance at the USBC Masters, finishing sixth. He also finished second among rookies in points and third in earnings.

Here are the stats sent out by the PBA for all POY and ROY candidates:
