In one of the most emotional moments of the season so far, Kyle Troup and Jesper Svensson won the 2020 Mark Roth-Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship in honor of Troup’s mother, who passed away a month ago.

Troup and Svensson defeated EJ Tackett and Marshall Kent, 234-205, at Royal Pin Woodland in Indianapolis to claim their second doubles title. The show was taped last week and aired Sunday.

“We said a month ago that we were going to win this tournament for mom and that’s exactly what we did,” Troup said. “We were struggling a little bit leading up to the match; we couldn’t settle down. I just told him we are some of the best bowlers in the world, we just gotta make five good shots apiece. We executed some really good shots.”

The win was an emotional one for the Troup family, who lost Sherri Troup on Feb. 9 at age 56 after a long battle with cancer.

Needing just six pins on his first shot in the final frame to secure the win, Troup fired a perfect strike and celebrated with his teammate and his father, eight-time PBA Tour champion Guppy Troup. It was Troup’s fifth career title while Svensson has won 10 times.

Kent, who finished the match first, actually had a chance to secure the title for his team with a double and seven pins in the final frame. Instead, Kent yanked the ball left on his first shot and left the 3-10 baby split, which he missed to allow Troup and Svensson to coast.

In the semifinal, Kent and Tackett led from the very first frame and rolled to a 263-190 victory over Anthony Simonsen and Dom Barrett.

Kent and Tackett failed to double in the first three frames but then went on a striking spree starting in the fourth frame. They wouldn’t miss until the fill ball as they cruised to the win.

Simonsen and Barrett easily took care of Kris Prather and Andrew Anderson in the second match of the stepladder, 226-190, winning before the match even got to the final frame.

Prather and Anderson actually held a very early lead in the match but Simonsen and Barrett rattled off five consecutive strikes from the third through seventh frames to pull away.

In the opening match of the stepladder, Simonsen and Barrett defeated Jakob Butturff and Osku Palermaa, 237-236.

Palermaa struck in the ninth frame and Butturff followed it up by striking out to put the pressure on in the final frame. Simonsen needed strike, nine, spare to win by one and he did exactly that.
