Matt McNiel moved into the top spot in the final game to earn top qualifier honors Sunday night at the 2020 PBA Cheetah Championship.
McNiel, who finished fourth last year in the Cheetah event, used a 290 game to close out the night to finish first with a 10-game total of 2,424, a 242.40 average, at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas. The Cheetah Championship is the first event of the 2020 PBA World Series of Bowling XI.
The top 16 players advanced into the best-of-five single elimination match-play bracket, which will take place Saturday starting at 3 p.m. Eastern live on FloBowling.
RESULTS: PBA Cheetah Championship Round 2 Qualifying
McNiel, a left-hander, was consistent across both five-game qualifying blocks Sunday as he finished the first round with 1,217 and the second round with 1,207.
EJ Tackett, who held the lead going into the final game, qualified in second place with 2,401 after closing with a 205 game.
Jakob Butturff finished in third place with 2,359 as left-handers had a strong showing in the event. In all, five lefties made the cut into match play.

Other players advancing into the bracket were Darren Tang, Francois Lavoie, Packy Hanrahan, Wes Malott, Mykel Holliman, Kyle Troup, Kyle Sherman, Chris Via, Arturo Quintero, Patrick Girard, Jesper Svensson and Bill O’Neill.
There was a rolloff for the final spot in match play between Sean Rash and Ryan Ciminelli after they finished qualifying tied with 2,242, a 224.20 average. Rash won the rolloff 243-178 to advance.
Michael Martell had a rollercoaster day on the lanes. After finishing the first round with just 891, Martell came back in the second round and shot an astonishing 1,339.
He tossed back-to-back 300s in Games 3 and 4 and closed the block with 265. Despite the big finish, he missed the cut by 12 pins.
