Jason Belmonte surged from 30th after the first round into the top spot as qualifying came to a close Tuesday night for the 2020 PBA Scorpion Championship.

Belmonte ended qualifying with a 10-game total of 2,324, a 232.40 average, to lead the 120-player field at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas. The Scorpion is the third event of the 2020 PBA World Series of Bowling.

The top 16 players advanced to the best-of-five single-elimination match-play bracket, which will take place Tuesday live on FloBowling. Cashers qualifying for the PBA World Championship begins Wednesday at 3 p.m. Eastern.

Results: Scorpion Qualifying Round 2

After shooting 1,102 in the first round Tuesday afternoon, Belmonte turned things around in the evening block and put up the highest score in the field with 1,222.

Jakob Butturff qualified second with 2,286, while fellow lefty Jesper Svensson was third with 2,285. BJ Moore was fourth with 2,279, and Brad Miller was fifth with 2,275.

PWBA star Danielle McEwan, one of two women in the field, qualified for match play in the sixth position. Other players who made match play were Dino Castillo, Kenny Ryan, Darren Tang, Marshall Kent, Carsten Hansen, Chris Via, Francois Lavoie, Kris Prather, EJ Tackett and Anthony Simonsen.

Qualifying scores from the Cheetah, Chameleon and Scorpion events were used to put together a 30-game qualifying total for the PBA World Championship this week.

With 30 games now completed, the top 40 advanced into Wednesday’s cashers qualifying, where the field will be narrowed to the top 16.

Butturff jumped up a spot to take the lead away from Tackett with a 30-game total of 7,030, a 234.33 average. Tackett is second with 6,985, while Svensson is third with 6,908.

Patrick Girard held on to earn the final advancing spot in 40th place with 6,395, a 213.17 average.
