Harry Sullins Fires 279 In Last Game Of Round 1 To Lead PBA60 Championship

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Five-time PBA Tour and three-time PBA50 Tour winner Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Twp., Mich., bowled a 279 game in his last game of first round qualifying Tuesday to take the lead in the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship presented by 900 Global for players ages 60 and over.

The 60-year-old Sullins bowled a 1,683 seven-game pinfall total at Pro Bowl West with games of 196, 276, 247, 212, 265, 208 and 279 going around Sammy Ventura of Syracuse, N.Y., who finished the round in second with 1,653.

The 196 game could have been 220,” Sullins said. “I had a good shot to the pocket but I just didn’t have my speed and line to the pocket matched up like I did in the second game.

“The 279 at the end of the game was kind of unexpected because in the game before it (208) I didn’t have a good feel,” he added. I really didn’t make much of an adjustment in the last game, I just refocused and gave it a little more extra effort.”

Sullins is hoping to end a drought without a win in national senior competition that dates back to the 2011 PBA50 Senior Lake County Open.

“Every year it gets harder on the senior tour,” Sullins said. “There’s more and more good players coming out here and there’s just a lot of guys that are just plain tough to beat. I have had a lot of good finishes recently just not good enough to make the top five.

Rounding out the top five after the first round were William Peters, Dayton Ohio, 1,623; Dale Csuhta, Wadsworth, Ohio, 1,620, and Bruce Hall, Westborough, Mass., 1,597. PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss finished the round in sixth with 1,579 and defending champion Darryl Bower of Middletown, Pa., finished tied for 22nd with 1,495.

The PBA60 Dick Weber Championship is the final event of the PBA50 Tour season and is the second event specifically for players 60 and over. Mike Dias won the USBC Super Senior Classic for players 60 and over in June.

The PBA60 Dick Weber Championship is streamed live on PBA’s online bowling channel PBA Xtra Frame on FloBowling now with multiple streams. Subscription information is available by visiting www.flobowling.com.

The entire field returns Wednesday morning for another seven-game qualifying round at 9 a.m. ET. The top 32 players will then advance to the first round of match play at 4 p.m. After another match play round Thursday morning, the top five will be determined for the stepladder finals at 1 p.m.
