There’s no rest for the weary on the PBA50 Tour as the top senior professional bowlers head to the PBA50 Mooresville Open this week.

After kicking off the season with back-to-back events in Florida, the PBA50 Tour heads north to Mooresville, North Carolina, and Victory Lanes Family Entertainment Center.

Here are a few key points to get you ready for the Mooresville Open:

Home game for defending champ Voss

Defending champion Brian Voss will have a home game this week as the PBA Hall of Famer looks to win again in the area he moved to over a year ago.

Just three months after moving to nearby Cornelius, North Carolina, Voss captured the 2018 PBA50 Mooresville Open down the street from his home with a 226-223 victory over Lennie Boresch Jr.

Voss delivered two clutch strikes in the final frame to beat Boresch and win his second career PBA50 Tour title.

“There are days I wonder why I’m still doing this,” Voss told the PBA after the victory. “But when you experience this, it keeps you coming back. I love to entertain, to show my emotions. I live just to feel the adrenalin, not only when you win, but the path along the way. It’s addictive, overcoming the fear. It’s a great feeling.”

Can Walter Ray be stopped?

We are two events into the 2019 PBA50 Tour season and there’s only been one winner this season – Walter Ray Williams Jr.

The PBA Hall of Famer has a firm hold on the 2019 PBA50 Player of the Year race just two events into the season and shows no signs of slowing down.

Fresh off his victory at the PBA50 National Championship, Williams is in the field again this week and needs just one more PBA50 victory to match John Handegard’s all-time record of 14 PBA50 Tour titles.

The format and lane condition

The tournament begins with two rounds of qualifying on Monday and Tuesday. Each round is eight games and there are two squads each day.

After 16 games of qualifying, all cashers will advance, though not all into the same round.

The top eight qualifiers after 16 games will be seeded directly into the second round of match play, while qualifiers ranked No. 9 through No. 24 will be seeded into the first round of match play.

The remaining cashers after qualifying, those ranked 25th or lower, will bowl a five-game cashers qualifying round with the top eight players from that round advancing into the first round of match play.

All pins are dropped before each round of match play. The first round of match play is five games with the eight cashers round advancers joining qualifiers ranked ninth through 24th. The top eight bowlers from this round will advance.

The second round of match play is six games with the top eight from the first round of match play joining the top eight qualifiers.

When all that is said and done, the final five will bowl in the stepladder finals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern.

As for the lane condition, the tournament will use the PBA Don Carter pattern. It’s a 39-foot pattern with 29.81 mL of oil and a ratio of 3.41:1.
