Eight PBA stars from the United States and Europe will battle starting today in the 20th edition of the Weber Cup, bowling’s version of golf’s Ryder Cup.

Team USA will be represented by Chris Barnes, Jakob Butturff, Kyle Troup and Anthony Simonsen, while Europe will be led by Dom Barrett, Jesper Svensson, Stu Williams and Osku Palermaa.

The event kicks off at 2 p.m. Eastern today and continues through Friday at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Although FloBowling is not broadcasting the event, we will provide live updates as matches happen via reports on FloBowling.com.

Over the past 19 years, the Weber Cup has been held exclusively in Europe and this year marks the event’s first trip to the United States. During that stretch, Europe has won the event 10 times, while Team USA has won nine times.

“It’s a bit of a shame that, for the first time, we won’t have the home crowd but I know everyone watching back home will be cheering as loud as they have in previous Weber Cups,” said Barrett, the European captain. “Myself and the other guys on the team have spent lots of time competing in Las Vegas, but never in a team environment when we will be the away team. That will be the biggest challenge for us, which we are really looking forward to. They took home the trophy last year, it’s now our turn to go into their back yard and take it back.”

At last year’s Weber Cup, Team USA took a 19-10 victory with Troup being named the event’s MVP. However, prior to that, the European side won five years in a row.

“I am sure the Europeans will be charged up in their attempt to win it back,” Team USA captain Barnes said. “There is a lot of pride and talent on that team and I am sure they will try and use last year’s beating as motivation. But now that that we will be bringing the Cup to Las Vegas on our home turf for the first time ever, I think we will pose a huge challenge for them.”

The Weber Cup consists of a series of singles, doubles and Baker matches with one point available for each win. The first team to win 18 points wins the Weber Cup.

The event takes place on one specially constructed lane inside Mandalay Bay, giving it a unique feel. Each member of the winning team will earn $10,000, while the losing team players will receive $5,000 each.
