Williams Looks To Lock Up PBA50 POY This Weekend

A sold-out field of 100 players will take to the lanes as the PBA50 Tour holds its second to last event of the season this weekend.

The PBA50 Spectrum Lanes Open in Wyoming, Michigan, begins Friday live on FloBowling and will be followed next week by the PBA50 Dave Small’s Jax 60 Classic to close out the PBA50 campaign. A pair of PBA60 events will be held after that.

Here are a few key points to get you ready for the PBA50 Spectrum Lanes Open:

Walter Ray can clinch POY this weekend

With his second-place finish Tuesday in the finals of the PBA50 Dave Small’s Championship Lanes Classic, Walter Ray Williams Jr. all but locked up the 2019 PBA50 Player of the Year award.

However, it’s still mathematically possible for Brian LeClair to get there. All that drama will be eliminated, however, if Williams finishes 15th or higher this weekend. If he does that, he has locked up enough points that it won’t matter if LeClair even wins the last two events of the season.

In nine events, Williams has finished in the top 10 every single event. So the odds of him doing it again seem to be pretty good, especially since this weekend’s event is a total pinfall format that should favor him.

If Williams locks up POY honors it will be the third time he’s won the award. He was also the PBA50 Tour’s top player in 2012 and 2013.

And no, winning the award three times isn’t a record, it’s happened plenty of times. Tom Baker won the PBA50 Player of the Year honors four years in a row from 2005-2008.

As for the PBA60 Player of the Year race, that’s almost wrapped up as well thanks to Ron Mohr’s victory earlier this week. Finishing fourth or higher this weekend would guarantee the award for Mohr, and even if he doesn’t finish that high he is still the odds on favorite.

Kretzer returns to site of first PBA50 title

At last year’s event in Wyoming, Michigan, Brian Kretzer rolled to his first career PBA50 title in the PBA50 Cup. Although the event has a different name and isn’t a major this year, Kretzer will look to recapture some of that magic this weekend.

Kretzer defeated Amleto Monacelli, 259-225 in the championship match as he rattled off seven consecutive strikes down the stretch to secure the victory.

Also making the show last year were Eugene McCune, Parker Bohn III and Mohr.

Speaking of Monacelli, he will miss this weekend’s event because he’s coaching the Dominican Republic’s team at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

The format and lane condition

There’s no Matrix of Fairness this weekend and that will have the top guys on the PBA50 Tour licking their chops at Spectrum Lanes.

All bowlers will bowl two eight-game rounds of qualifying with the top 32 after 16 games advancing into match play. The advancers will bowl two six-game rounds of match play and all pins carry over each round.

After 28 total games, the top five players will bowl for the title in the stepladder finals.

This week the players will face the PBA Del Ballard pattern, which is 34 feet long.
