ATX Invite Preview: Sterner Vs. Johnson

When Jason Sterner and AJ Johnson meet in the opening round of the FloBowling ATX Invite, it will be tussle between the player with the worst average finish this summer against the player with the best.

Sterner, the fourth seed, took it down to the wire and won the final event of the summer to qualify for the event, while Johnson, the fifth seed, was the most consistent player throughout the nine events.

Sterner and Johnson will bowl the second match of the opening round Saturday when the ATX Invite begins at 2 p.m. Eastern on Saturday live on FloBowling. The winner takes on either No. 1 Sean Rash or No. 8 Tommy Jones in the semifinals.

Johnson is still looking for his first career PBA Tour title, but the Summer Tour was among the most consistent stretches of his career. His best finish was second at the PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles, while his worst was 34th at the PBA Wolf Open.

Sterner, meanwhile, struggled in his first four appearances of the summer but won the PBA Illinois Open, which awarded double points, to jump from outside the cut into the fourth spot.

Here’s how they finished in each event this summer:

As for earnings, Sterner picked up $20,000 for his win at the PBA Illinois Open, which makes up most of his $26,920 during the Summer Tour. Despite his consistency and only failing to cash in one event, Johnson’s inability to win hit him hard in the pocket as he only earned $17,775.

Prediction

This should be an extremely close match, especially with Sterner’s confidence sky-high after winning the Illinois Open. That being said, Johnson has just been so consistently good that it’s tough to bet against him. Prediction: Johnson by 2.
