When the Southwest stepladder finals air Sunday at the 2021 PBA Players Championship, it will feature a group with less total titles than any other region.

Francois Lavoie, the top seed in the Southwest who has four titles, is the only PBA champion on the show. The other four players – Packy Hanrahan, Keven Williams, Ben Martinez and AJ Chapman – are hungry for even a win on TV let alone a title.

The Southwest stepladder will air Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern on FS1 (United States) and FloBowling (international). The winner will earn a spot in the finals of the PBA Players Championship, which will happen Feb. 21.

Lavoie was the top-ranked player in the Southwest in the FloBowling PBA Power Rankings and had the highest top seed qualifying total of any of the regions with 6,600 over 28 games.

“It’s a little difficult because it’s a different city, different state, everything’s different about it,” Lavoie told FloBowling about carrying forward the momentum from qualifying. “I have to remember the good things I did over there. At the same time, I’m only bowling one game. It’s going to go by fast. I have to keep things as slow as possible, stay in control of what I can be in control of and just execute one good shot at a time.”

The native Canadian who lives in Wichita, Kansas, has two U.S. Open titles on his resume and a fifth overall title would meet the minimum performance requirements for the PBA Hall of Fame.

Lavoie's four titles make up the entirety of the titles on the Southwest show, giving it the fewest of any region. The South show has six titles, the West has 14, the Central has 18 and the South has the most with 28 total titles.

Hanrahan: I Bowl For The Trophy

Hanrahan, the No. 2 seed, made a pair of shows last year at the 2020 PBA Oklahoma Open and the 2020 PBA Cheetah Championship but didn’t win a match on TV in either. He did, however, have success on TV in the PBA League, helping the Portland Lumberjacks win the Elias Cup.

The third seed on the show is Williams, who may be known more for his music than his bowling at this stage in his career, though that’s something he’s hoping to change. Williams, who composed and performed Kyle Troup’s strike song “Pick It Out,” has a 1-1 record on TV, having finished third at the 2018 PBA 60th Anniversary Classic.

Williams: Music Is My Passion

Martinez just joined the PBA last month and will make his television debut. The native of Mexico has competed for his country’s national team and was the 2020 NAIA Player of the Year at Savannah College of Art & Design.

Chapman, who competed collegiately at Wichita State like Lavoie and Hanrahan, has been a player flirting with winning his first title for a while now. He came close when he finished second at the 2019 Chesapeake Open. He finished fifth in the PBA Players Championship in 2017.

The Southwest show is the second of five regional stepladder finals airing in the coming weeks. The winner of each regional will compete in the live finals on Feb. 21 on FOX (U.S.) and FloBowling (international). Seeding for that stepladder will happen on Feb. 20 live exclusively on FloBowling.
